Defective Timing Chains and Engine Failure

This is particularly so in the VW / Audi EA888 engine which has issues with the tensioners and guides in the timing chain system. Changing the engine oil regularly with the correct grade of engine oil can greatly improve the life expectancy of timing chains and their tensioners.

The EA888 engines are a family of three and four-cylinder engines that are currently in use across the Volkswagen Group. The EA888 engine is available in two sizes: 1.8T and 2.0T. With engine output ranges from 111 kW (151 PS; 149 bhp) to over 223 kW (303 PS; 299 bhp).

VW's 1.8-litre turbocharged engine has a tiny oil capacity that often results in oil sludge. Sludge is the thickening of engine oil. It's caused by moisture, heat, and other contaminants that break the oil down, causing it to become very thick, which reduces its flow and lubrication qualities. Making sure to check your oil level regularly, and changing your engine oil and filter before the recommended service intervals helps to minimise engine oil sludge. Although more expensive that regular engine oils, using engine oil that dissipates heat more efficiently is also recommended for this engine.
